about

This song is based on a tale that includes both a werewolf and spookwolf. It is said to be a true story from Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. There is a place there named Die Woolf Man’s Grob - which is the spot where the old werewolf fell and died.

lyrics

May Paul did tend her sheep
Upon the hills,
Where too the wolves were seen.
They sought their kill.

May Paul watched her flock
Along their way.
The grey man watched May Paul
Through every day.

And so he came to protect May.
Until he lay in the wolfman's grave.

All around the town
Dark tales were spun.
The grey man was a wolf.
He should be shunned.

But up upon the hills,
Another way:
She was kind to him
And he to May.

The wolves did taste fresh blood
Most every day.
But May lost none of her flock.
Wolves turned away.

All in the grey man's gaze
The wolves did flee.
He watched over May,
As she her sheep.

One night a great wolf came
Down from the trees.
His coat was worn and grey,
But sharp his teeth.

As he looked for prey
A farmer spied
And shot the old grey wolf
All through his side.

The wolf took flight into the night
And then he laid on the wolfman's grave.

Upon the next morn,
All in the sun,
The farmer tracked the wolf
By trail of blood.

But where a wolf should be
The grey man lay
And there they buried him
In the wolfman's grave.

The grey man died and no one cried
Except for May, on the wolfman's grave.

And still May tended sheep
Upon the hills.
And still the wolves were seen.
They sought their kill.

But lo' they turned in fear
And ran away
When they did face the ghost
Of a wolf so grey.

The grey wolf came to protect May.
He was raised from the wolfman's grave.
