Perhaps you have heard of one of the famous legends of York County, Pennsylvania: Toad Road and the Seven Gates of Hell. What you may have read about this (or seen in a film) is probably wrong. My book, "Beyond the Seventh Gate," will hopefully correct some of the nonsense associated with Toad Road. For one, there was never an insane asylum anywhere near the area. In fact, York County has never had a dedicated insane sylum. Likewise, there were never seven physical gates of any sort on Toad Road. However, I do use them as a metaphor and theorize that the gates may exist in psychic form as some sort of tulpa.

The original story of Toad Road, as I heard it, was simply that something would stalk you through the woods there. You were not to look behind you, but just keep moving. This ties in with a strange creature from Pennsylvania folklore, The Hidebehind. It was said that only the bravest should be the last in line, for to look back would spell one’s doom. The Hidebehind stalked people through the woods and took the fearful or the unlucky who would never be seen again. This also calls to mind David Paulides’ "Missing 411" books in which he details the strange disappearances of people in the forests of North America. Many of them happened to be the last in line of their group.
