Pennsylvania has so many werewolf tales that we even have a local term for the ghost of a werewolf, the spookwolf. The Red Dog Fox is a Pennsylvania werewolf / spookwolf tale (or perhaps a werefox tale) from around Brandywine Creek. A young, red-haired man named Gil Trudeau was taken by the US forces as a guide during the Revolutionary War. The troops started to notice that Gil would disappear and in his absence they would see a wolf-sized fox around the camp. They began to call it the Red Dog Fox. One night a guard shot the creature. The soldiers found it the next day. As the fox lay dying, it transformed back into the shape of Gil. Some people still see the ghost of the Red Dog Fox in the area.
